This is the first double court tomb I have been to and it is fantastic. It would appear that no one has visited the site for a while as there were still F&M notices up at the little car park.
The two tombs lie back to back with the chambers running out from the center of the rectangular cairn along its length to the shallow, but wide courts at either end.
The chamber each measure around 8m in length and are split by jambs into four or five smaller chambers. The better of the two courtyards is sadly the one that you can not get a good view of as for some reason the heritage people decided not to buy the extra 20ft of land that would have enabled a fairly good view of this wonder.
To really appreciate this tomb I think an aerial view would be necessary.
It's hard to believe that it's been nearby 3 years since I visited this site. I wasn't actually planning on visiting today, but when I passed the sign as I headed for Strangford to get the ferry across to Portaferry I decided to come back and take another look.
This is a wonderful monument, but it's so hard to appreciate. The fence is so annoyingly close to the cairn that you cannot see the whole thing. This is one of those sites that can only rtuly be appreciated from above and a viewing tower in one corner or ever a high bridge over it would be brilliant.

______From Downpatrick take the A25 north east for about 8km and turn off to the left I think there are sign posts here. After a further 2.5km you will come to a smal car park on the left. Park here, walk throught the gate and across the fields to reach this great tomb.

This is an explanation of (and a bit of a disclaimer for) the coordinates I provide. Where a GPS figure is given this is the master for all other coordinates. According to my Garmin these are quite accurate. Where there is no GPS figure the 6 figure grid reference is master for the others. This may not be very accurate as it could have come from the OS maps and could have been read by eye. Consequently, all other cordinates are going to have inaccuracies. The calculation of Longitude and Latitude uses an algorithm that is not 100% accurate. The long/lat figures are used as a basis for calculating the UTM & ITM coordinates. Consequently, UTM & ITM coordinates are slightly out. UTM is a global coordinate system - Universal Transverse Mercator - that is at the core of the GPS system. ITM is the new coordinate system - Irish Transverse Mercator - that is more accurate and more GPS friendly than the Irish Grid Reference system. This will be used on the next generation of Irish OS maps. |
