This is definitely a site to take the kids to! Quite amaingly most of the stone castle still stands atop the motte and it is a fine state of preserve.

Looking to the right as you reach the base of the mound it is possible to see the ditch and bank that surround it clearly. There is a lovely little spiral path that leads around the mound and up to the top. Look out for the bricked up souterrain entrance half way up.

Just at the top you find the stone walls still in tact with a narrow entrance into the main area on top. The tower/keep of the castle remains along with the foundations of the other buildings.

Directions

From Dundalk take the N52 south and turn onto the R178 almost immediately. Take the third right hand turn and continue for around 1.5km. There are signs directing you to the motte that point up a track on the left hand side just after some sort of army base gateway. Walk up this path and enjoy the place.

About Coordinates Displayed

This is an explanation of (and a bit of a disclaimer for) the coordinates I provide.

Where a GPS figure is given this is the master for all other coordinates. According to my Garmin these are quite accurate.

Where there is no GPS figure the 6 figure grid reference is master for the others. This may not be very accurate as it could have come from the OS maps and could have been read by eye. Consequently, all other cordinates are going to have inaccuracies.

The calculation of Longitude and Latitude uses an algorithm that is not 100% accurate. The long/lat figures are used as a basis for calculating the UTM & ITM coordinates. Consequently, UTM & ITM coordinates are slightly out.

UTM is a global coordinate system - Universal Transverse Mercator - that is at the core of the GPS system.

ITM is the new coordinate system - Irish Transverse Mercator - that is more accurate and more GPS friendly than the Irish Grid Reference system. This will be used on the next generation of Irish OS maps.
