Visit Notes

Sunday, 17th February 2008

St Kieran is said to have visited here. A tree used to stand by the road, which is said to have sprouted from his walking stick when he planted at the roadside. The tree was removed by the council some years ago, because it was a danger to traffic. This upset the locals enormously!

To add to the insult the stream at the back of the well was deepened, which dropped the water level and nearly extinguished the well completely! The one well still has water in it (this is the curing well), but the other is all but empty. This was the drinking well and provided the fresh water for a wide area until mains water reached here.

The man that walked me around and told me all these tales told me that when he was a lad (60 years ago) he saw a trout in the pipe leading from the well to the stream. There are many old tales of wise salmon and trout in holy wells, but this is the first time I have heard a recent one.

About Coordinates Displayed

This is an explanation of (and a bit of a disclaimer for) the coordinates I provide.

Where a GPS figure is given this is the master for all other coordinates. According to my Garmin these are quite accurate.

Where there is no GPS figure the 6 figure grid reference is master for the others. This may not be very accurate as it could have come from the OS maps and could have been read by eye. Consequently, all other cordinates are going to have inaccuracies.

The calculation of Longitude and Latitude uses an algorithm that is not 100% accurate. The long/lat figures are used as a basis for calculating the UTM & ITM coordinates. Consequently, UTM & ITM coordinates are slightly out.

UTM is a global coordinate system - Universal Transverse Mercator - that is at the core of the GPS system.

ITM is the new coordinate system - Irish Transverse Mercator - that is more accurate and more GPS friendly than the Irish Grid Reference system. This will be used on the next generation of Irish OS maps.
