Visit Notes

Sunday, 13th March 2005

I had a lovely drive up as far as Letterkenny and then the weather started to look a bit grim. As I passed the sign for Doon Well it started to snow, so I decided to stop here and finally take a look. It is said that water from Doon Well has been sent to nearly every country in the world.

The little clearing in which the well sits is quite idyllic - I certainly wouldn't mind living in the farmhouse nearby (except perhaps around pattern time at the well, when it must get very busy here!)

The well is covered by a small, low shelter and protected by small doors. Next to the well are two thorn trees, which are covered in offerings in the manner of many raggy trees. Despite the large car park, the public toilets and the farmhouse the spot has a feeling of calm about it and seems to exude the ancientness of its history.

It's very different to visit this well in the summer. The tress around the square and the rag tree make the location much more tranquil and less gloomy when they're in leaf.

We took some water from the well to take home with us as we know a few people who might appreciate it.

About Coordinates Displayed

This is an explanation of (and a bit of a disclaimer for) the coordinates I provide.

Where a GPS figure is given this is the master for all other coordinates. According to my Garmin these are quite accurate.

Where there is no GPS figure the 6 figure grid reference is master for the others. This may not be very accurate as it could have come from the OS maps and could have been read by eye. Consequently, all other cordinates are going to have inaccuracies.

The calculation of Longitude and Latitude uses an algorithm that is not 100% accurate. The long/lat figures are used as a basis for calculating the UTM & ITM coordinates. Consequently, UTM & ITM coordinates are slightly out.

UTM is a global coordinate system - Universal Transverse Mercator - that is at the core of the GPS system.

ITM is the new coordinate system - Irish Transverse Mercator - that is more accurate and more GPS friendly than the Irish Grid Reference system. This will be used on the next generation of Irish OS maps.
