Brennanstown Portal TombFrom Megawikimania
DescriptionBrennanstown portal tomb, AKA Glendruid, is a fine example of a portal tomb. Typical of other Dublin portal tombs it has a large capstone estimated to weigh up to 40 tons[1]. From the side the capstone is wedge-shaped with a horizontal base and the thicker end resting on the portal stones. This massive capstone covers a chamber some 4m x 2m in plan. The monument is aligned east-west and at the west end there are two fine portal stones measuring 1.6m tall. In between these there is a full-height doorstone. The inside of the chamber can be accessed at the rear of the monument. The capstone has a unique feature amongst portal tombs - a gutter carved in its upper surface. Similar guuter features have been found on the stones forming the roof of the passage in the main monument at Newgrange, County Meath[1].
