| Ballyhacket Lower - Hill Fort |
This grave stone is a most curious thing. I didn't see it the first time I walked past it and so ended up going to the rath (S 831 796) first.
I was surprised to actually see it and amazed that I could have missed it when I walked past. What is most perplexing is it's location - built into a dry stone wall. I think there must have been a church or something here in the past. It was not until I got the photos back that I noticed some writing on the foot of the sarcophagus.
Whoever occupied it could not have been very tall as the inner 'chamber' can not be more that 1.6m.
From Tullow follow the R418 north past the junction with the R726. Take the next right and drive right up to the house at the far end. Walk through the gate to the right and follow the farm track to a little enclosure. The grave is about 10m past this in the field. The rath can clearly be seen on the ridge if the field is not planted.
