Drombeg (County Cork) eat your heart out! I'm sorry, but Drombeg's over touristised feel just doesn't come close to this place. This simply has to be the best multiple stone axial circle there is. Each stone that forms part of its form seems to be perfect for the position it's in.
As I was looking for a way in to the site I came to a gate with 'Beware Of The Bull' on it ... once again I knew I was close! Anyway, don't go through this gate - there's no bull there, but the next gate up the hill is better. It has an overgrown track leading from it. Walk along this track to the far side of the field and then cross the next field. The circle awaits you in the next field to that in a straight line to the circle. As I was walking up this track I saw the farmer and because of the bull sign I approached him. The first thing he said was, "You'll be after the circle. It's just up there.", and pointed the way. So, no problem with access then.
One of the best things to see was that the farmer obviously takes great care of the site - the grass had recently been cut in the centre.
Around the outside of the thirteen stones in a swampy area that I do not think was caused by cattle walking around it, but indicates the presence of a fosse.
Either as you walk away (if you can) or as you approach be sure to look along the alignment of the axial stone to the hills beyond and note how it lines up with a dip in the horizon between two hills. The mid winter sun must look stunning setting in that gap. Unfortunately, some trees would stop you from experiencing it from within the circle itself.
You may be able to tell that this is one of the sites I spent too long at today, but I don't care. This is one that I'll definitely be back to over and over again.

Nothing compares to Reanascreena! What a wonderful place it is! The field being uncut and full of knee-high grasses and meadow flowers made this visit better. The dark purple orchids were my favourites.
The surrounding ditch is getting choked up with reeds and it would be nice to see it cleared, but when you are faced with such a beautifully formed monument not a lot can detract from it.
The directions I was given at the farmhouse were quite simple and involved no fence-hopping. On the road to the south of the circle there is a bungalow. To the west of this bungalow there is a gate. If you go through this and walk straight up the field to the top gate you reach the field with the stone circle in it. Just keep walking straight on and you’ll see it.
