Visit Notes

Sunday, 23rd March 2003

Last time I came here it was very late in the day, so I did not have chance to go to the visitor's centre. This time I was here for a gentle day out and took the opportunity. The 5 euro entry fee is worth it.

The centre houses the all three original crosses and the famous Clonmacnoise cross slabs. Replicas of the crosses can be seen outside, but the cross slabs can not. The crosses are beautifully lit, highlighting the features wonderfully. The same applies to the cross slabs. I have seen many pictures of the cross slabs many time, but nothing that really compares to seeing them 'in the flesh'.

For once the 'audio-visual' display is well worth watching. Unlike Newgrange (County Meath) there is a lot of written history of Clonmacnoise. This allows the film to include real facts and it is very informative.
