Visit Notes

Sunday, 2nd February 2003

The OS map just states that there is a bullaun stone here, but upon reading the Wicklow Archaeological Inventory I learned of a second, single bullaun nearby. Naturally, I went to have a look. I scoured the field, which is littered with stones, many of which are overgrown with grass and I was just beginning to think that this one had been lost when I found it. It's no wonder I didn't see it on my previous visit - The top of the stone is fluch with the field and I think it may well be lost to sight within a couple of years.

It is situated about 7m up the field from the multiple bullaun stone and around 3m from the fence by the road. The bullaun is quite shallow, but about 25cm across. With this stone disappearing I wonder how many others lie beneath the turf here.
