In the field to the west of the entrance to Knappogue Castle are some very, very interesting stones. Close to the gateway there is a group of three and a lone stone stands at the far end around 200m away.

Each stone is of a bubbly volcanic type with lumps, bumps and holes. The group of three form a wide triangle, two to the south and one at the north. Now, I may be jumping to some extreme conclusions here but I get the feeling that this was once a 20m wide avenue, running east to west that would have been over 200m in length. Only a little digging could tell, but the field has been plough (I think) and so all traces may have been lost.

These 1.8 to 2m tall stones are great. Not even the proximity of the road can remove anything from their form or presence.
