Judging from the stone lying at the base of the shorter of these two stones I would say this was in fact a three stone alignment , but Anthony thinks it may indicate that the stone has been broken off.
The two stones now straddle a farm track and are next to the fences either side, one on the track and one over the fence in the adjoining field. They are conglomerates, with the rightmost one (as you approach from the road) being the most interesting one - all nobbly and with a fine shoulder about half way up its 1.5m height.
From Clogh Mills take the B94 south to Clogh and the turn left along the B64. After 800m you will pass a road on the left. Start counting the farm tracks on the right. Just over 1km from this turn off you should come to the third lane on the right with a bungalow next to it. The stones are 100m past this bungalow right on the track.
This is an explanation of (and a bit of a disclaimer for) the coordinates I provide. Where a GPS figure is given this is the master for all other coordinates. According to my Garmin these are quite accurate. Where there is no GPS figure the 6 figure grid reference is master for the others. This may not be very accurate as it could have come from the OS maps and could have been read by eye. Consequently, all other cordinates are going to have inaccuracies. The calculation of Longitude and Latitude uses an algorithm that is not 100% accurate. The long/lat figures are used as a basis for calculating the UTM & ITM coordinates. Consequently, UTM & ITM coordinates are slightly out. UTM is a global coordinate system - Universal Transverse Mercator - that is at the core of the GPS system. ITM is the new coordinate system - Irish Transverse Mercator - that is more accurate and more GPS friendly than the Irish Grid Reference system. This will be used on the next generation of Irish OS maps. |
