Visit Notes

Sunday, 10th November 2002

I need a t-shirt printing that says 'Born to go the hard way!' Due to there being some writing on the OS map where a track is I set off in a very odd direction indeed. I only discovered this on the way back to the car, which took a fraction of the outward journey time.

Also I didn't see the signpost from the track to the sweat house until I was leaving. I scrambled about on the hillside and was getting very frustrated because the rough guess at co-ordinates from the map was proving hopeless. So, I stopped, listened and heard the stream running beneath the bushes about 10 yards away. Right! It is here somewhere. i looked around and realised that I was standing about 4m behind it.

So I scrambled down and was surprised at how good its condition is. The roof has collapsed slightly (two of the capping stones lie inside, but the 1.6m tall chamber retains quite a lot of its corbelling. The inner sanctum is actually quite large, around 1.4m square. The door is about 70cm tall, 40cm wide and lintelled with two thin slabs. The base of the wall in the doorway is around 1m thick. Like so many it is built into the bank behind it.
