There are not many four-poster stone circles in Ireland and so when I heard about this one I just had to come and investigate. i must admit that I was a little sceptical. The OS map just indicates 'Standing Stones'.
After knocking on the door at the farmhouse and welcomed by a one legged man in a wheel chair and feeling very uncomfortable (why was this? It was him and not me who'd lost a leg) I was given jolly directions to the stones. This jollyness made me feel all the more crappy.
So, I walked past the green roofed barn, through the gate at its side and up the field to the right to where I would see the stones. Oh my! WOW! What a wondeful sight they were. I soon forgot about one legged men and climbed into the field.
The circle (a rare Irish four poster) crowns the rounded top of this little hillock in the most majestic manner. The four main stones making the pointy bits.
To the north are two other stones that make the site a bit confusing, but the four main stones are so obvious that it is definitely a four poster.
The tallest (NE) stone is around 1.7m tall. The western stones are both 1.6m and the shortest (SE) stone is just 1.1m.
They are arranged in a rectangle that is 1m longer from north to south. The dimensions are approx 5m x 4m.
A fantastic place and a must visit site. Probably the finest that Wexford has to offer.
