I had intended upon climbing to the top of Spinans Hill and going to the cairns and the hill fort, but the weather had turned wonderfully hot and I decided that I'd walked enough already today. So, I settled for getting a good look from below.
The great stone wall that encircles the hill top, marking the Brusselstown Ring is very impressive and best viewed from the road to the south.
Spinans Hill is Europe's largest hill fort at over a mile long and 3/4 miles across.

No, I've still not been up to this hill fort, but I have found another great place to view it from and that is from the roads around Kelshamore (County Wicklow). From here you get a good look at the wall around the summit and the site is dominated by the huge Keaden Mountain to the left.

Again I haven't managed to visit this site, but I was lucky enough to be able to look down on it from Muckduff Upper (County Wicklow).

A Selection of Other Hill Forts

This is an explanation of (and a bit of a disclaimer for) the coordinates I provide. Where a GPS figure is given this is the master for all other coordinates. According to my Garmin these are quite accurate. Where there is no GPS figure the 6 figure grid reference is master for the others. This may not be very accurate as it could have come from the OS maps and could have been read by eye. Consequently, all other cordinates are going to have inaccuracies. The calculation of Longitude and Latitude uses an algorithm that is not 100% accurate. The long/lat figures are used as a basis for calculating the UTM & ITM coordinates. Consequently, UTM & ITM coordinates are slightly out. UTM is a global coordinate system - Universal Transverse Mercator - that is at the core of the GPS system. ITM is the new coordinate system - Irish Transverse Mercator - that is more accurate and more GPS friendly than the Irish Grid Reference system. This will be used on the next generation of Irish OS maps. |
