| Kilteel - Grave or Cross Slab |
There is not a lot left of the actual church ruins anymore, but inside there are two brick built pillars which have parts of the origial romanesque carvings built into them. In the surrounding fields there are remains of the old castle which was quite extensive.
Of the carvings there are some very interesting ones. The is a fine Adam and Eve scene, David carrying Golliath's head on a stick, two Norman figures wrestling or hugging, a bishop, a hippogriff attacking someone and several fine capitals (and sections of columns and chevroned pieces) with bearded faces. On these the moustaches and beards spread our and intertwine into lovely knotted patterns.
My favourite and most obsucre carving is of a headless, crouching beast supporting a flower. On the flower sit two people in X fashion (facing each other, the one on the others lap with legs intertwined).
This little ruin is well worth a visit.
From Dublin take the N81 south. After you pass the hospital take the second right (sign-posted to a golf course). Carry on over the first cross roads. You will go around a sharp left bend and then a sharp right, after another 2km you will come to another cross roads. Turn left here and continue into the village of Kilteel. Go past a right hand turn and take the next left. 300m along you will see the church yard in a field to your right. There is a gateway that you can park in 100m after the castle ruins at the roadside.
