Visit Notes

Saturday, 27th July 2002

I have been keen to see this cross for some time. It is of very early design with some beatiful Celtic patterns. It is one of the only surviving items from the monastery founded here by St. Feichin.

This rarely visited, and seemingly ignored, cross is a real gem amongst the Irish 'high' crosses. It stands an impressive 2.3m tall. The head depicts a crucifixion on the west face (this was probably the original east face) and the last judgement on the (current) east face.

One of the panels, my favourite one on this cross, shows a fantastic La Tene style swirl. If you want to see a good early sculptured cross then this is a fine example and should not be overlooked.
