A stone circle in County Dublin? Oh indeed! Underneath the peat and heather there may be a second within 100m of this one.

The circle really took me by surprise. Again I was expecting a cairn kerb but I got a stone circle. Only half of it remains visible but I think the rest may be beneath the peat which seems to have slid down from above.

Again the location of this 10m diameter circle is superb on a small shelf that looks due west across the valley towards the many peaks and troughs of Ballymorfin Hill.

On the west side of the circle 7 stones still stand and a further two tall, possiby south west facing entrance stones, lie fallen outside of the circle.

Of the stones that are still standing the tallest is around 90cm tall. As this site is possibly Dublin's only remaining stone circle and it is just 60m from a road I'd say it's well worth a visit.

Well spotted Anthony! This circle would seem to be an axial stone circle. I hadn't noticed that the one stone to the north west was significantly wider than the others.

It might be half missing but it just keeps getting better.

Directions

Take the R115 south from Rockbrook and after about 4km you will pass a turn off to the right. Keep going past the parking area on the left. As you round a bend you will see a memorial in 100m in front of you to the left. Just past this memorial is a left turn. Turn here and take this road until you pass another left turn. Park shortly after the junction. You will see a cattle crossing sign in front of you. Walk 30m along the road beyond this and head directly up the hill. The circle is about 50m in.
