Well, I certainly got more than I bargained for here. When you arrive at the little car park to the front of the church you are struck by the amazingly carve romanesque doorway. The keystone to the arch has a very worn, but discernable face on it. Look up and there is another fine piece of carving above the small window.
The inside has been messed around with and to the rear two windows of different style have been mounted in the wall. There is also a crypt with stairs to the rear of the church.
One thing you'll notice if you ever visit this is the strange extension to the rear. It took me a whille to recognised what it is. Someone, at some time in the past which cannot be too long ago, has built a squash court with viewing gallery against the back wall. Unbelievable!

I was planning to come back here a couple of weeks ago after visiting Crannagh (County Carlow), but decided not to. Then Andy Ryan visited a short while ago and happened across the two bullaun stones in the neighbouring field. I simply had to come back now!
I love this church's doorway. It's by no means the ultimate Romanesque doorway, but it's very nice. It's proportions seem just right. It is always surprising how much you forget about places after a while. It wasn't until I got home and read my previous notes that I realised that I had seen the small carved stone above the high window in the west wall on my other visit.

From Graiguenamanagh take the R705 north for 4.7km and turn right. After about 1.2km you will come to Ullard church on your left.
