Visit Notes

Sunday, 17th February 2002

This 11th century ruin is pushed by the local council as being a tourist attraction so consider my dismay at finding it all padlocked up!

The ruins stand on a much earlier monastic site dating back to the 7th century. The coucil blurb states that there are some interesting graves in the yard but because of the padlock I can not confirm this.

I finally found out where a key is held and so set off to have a good look around (see below).

These ruins are indeed worth a proper visit. Not visible from the gate the church houses a lovely, but worn, cross head, a simple stone font and some grave slabs.

The ruins are very simple and tidy. A lot of work has been done to keep this place neat. Someone, presumably local, takes great care of this place and hopefully it will be present for people to enjoy for a long time.

Directions

Killiney church is located on Marino Avenue West and really is besy found with a Dublin street atlas. Directions here would be mad.

Miscellanea

It is the early monastic site here that gives its name to the area. The name of the 6th century site was Cill Inion Leinin (Church of the Daughters of Leinin).

About Coordinates Displayed

This is an explanation of (and a bit of a disclaimer for) the coordinates I provide.

Where a GPS figure is given this is the master for all other coordinates. According to my Garmin these are quite accurate.

Where there is no GPS figure the 6 figure grid reference is master for the others. This may not be very accurate as it could have come from the OS maps and could have been read by eye. Consequently, all other cordinates are going to have inaccuracies.

The calculation of Longitude and Latitude uses an algorithm that is not 100% accurate. The long/lat figures are used as a basis for calculating the UTM & ITM coordinates. Consequently, UTM & ITM coordinates are slightly out.

UTM is a global coordinate system - Universal Transverse Mercator - that is at the core of the GPS system.

ITM is the new coordinate system - Irish Transverse Mercator - that is more accurate and more GPS friendly than the Irish Grid Reference system. This will be used on the next generation of Irish OS maps.
