It is tempting to say that this court tomb is ruined, but it probably isn't - it's just covered by a lot of cairn material. You can see some stone protruding through the cairn all over the place, but it's hard to form any pattern.
There are one or two places where lines of stones could be from the gallery and there is an arc of stones at the west end of the cairn. The cairn itself is well over 50m long and very wide. The site is on a west-facing slope overlooking a small lake. At its highest point the cairn is 1.5m above the field level.
Mature trees are growing all over the monument, which gives it the appearance of a tropical island in a see of green - perhaps this impression was helped a bit by the weather being so wonderful on the day of my visit!
There is a Beware of the Bull sign on the gate. He wasn't around on the day I visited, but take care anyway.

This is an explanation of (and a bit of a disclaimer for) the coordinates I provide. Where a GPS figure is given this is the master for all other coordinates. According to my Garmin these are quite accurate. Where there is no GPS figure the 6 figure grid reference is master for the others. This may not be very accurate as it could have come from the OS maps and could have been read by eye. Consequently, all other cordinates are going to have inaccuracies. The calculation of Longitude and Latitude uses an algorithm that is not 100% accurate. The long/lat figures are used as a basis for calculating the UTM & ITM coordinates. Consequently, UTM & ITM coordinates are slightly out. UTM is a global coordinate system - Universal Transverse Mercator - that is at the core of the GPS system. ITM is the new coordinate system - Irish Transverse Mercator - that is more accurate and more GPS friendly than the Irish Grid Reference system. This will be used on the next generation of Irish OS maps. |
