Visit Notes

Sunday, 3rd February 2002

This is quite a large standing some 2.4m tall. It is irregular in section and not finished or worked in any way. It leans by about 10 degrees, but I don't think it will be falling over just yet.

It may have been moved to it's current position (which differs slightly from the OS) at the edge of the field. The nearby mound marked on the OS is invisible and the stone 500 or so away proved very iilusive too.

Directions

From Ardee take the R170 east for about 3.5km. You will pass a left turn and then start to go up a small hill where it is possible to park on the left verge. Walk for about 150m further on and go through agate into a field. The stone is on your right about 5m from the gate.

Miscellanea

Apparently this stone has some indistinct ogham near the top on one edge. I must admit that I never saw this and will try and look for it next time I am passing. I think I was so impressed with the stone that I stood back and admired rather than inspecting it.

About Coordinates Displayed

This is an explanation of (and a bit of a disclaimer for) the coordinates I provide.

Where a GPS figure is given this is the master for all other coordinates. According to my Garmin these are quite accurate.

Where there is no GPS figure the 6 figure grid reference is master for the others. This may not be very accurate as it could have come from the OS maps and could have been read by eye. Consequently, all other cordinates are going to have inaccuracies.

The calculation of Longitude and Latitude uses an algorithm that is not 100% accurate. The long/lat figures are used as a basis for calculating the UTM & ITM coordinates. Consequently, UTM & ITM coordinates are slightly out.

UTM is a global coordinate system - Universal Transverse Mercator - that is at the core of the GPS system.

ITM is the new coordinate system - Irish Transverse Mercator - that is more accurate and more GPS friendly than the Irish Grid Reference system. This will be used on the next generation of Irish OS maps.
