This is a most unusual barrow. About the nearby ringfort (see Greatheath (County Laois)) I asked, "When is a ringfort not a ringfort?" Here I can ask when is a barrow not a barrow. When it's a golf tee! Yes, they really have places a golf tee on this barrow. The only trace of it is the west and northwest arc of the ditch. Interestingly, there is a large, nobbly stone set just inside the line of the ditch on the west side. I don't know if this is an original feature.

To reach this one you have to cross a fairway, so extreme caution must be employed. I stood some 30m off the course while waiting for a pair to pass and a ball landed not 10m from me! One of the golfers there came and spoke to me. He was a regular there and didn't know that the monument was there. He was very interested and hopefully he'll tell folks about the weirdo at the 7th tee and the prehistoric burial mound there.

About Coordinates Displayed

This is an explanation of (and a bit of a disclaimer for) the coordinates I provide.

Where a GPS figure is given this is the master for all other coordinates. According to my Garmin these are quite accurate.

Where there is no GPS figure the 6 figure grid reference is master for the others. This may not be very accurate as it could have come from the OS maps and could have been read by eye. Consequently, all other cordinates are going to have inaccuracies.

The calculation of Longitude and Latitude uses an algorithm that is not 100% accurate. The long/lat figures are used as a basis for calculating the UTM & ITM coordinates. Consequently, UTM & ITM coordinates are slightly out.

UTM is a global coordinate system - Universal Transverse Mercator - that is at the core of the GPS system.

ITM is the new coordinate system - Irish Transverse Mercator - that is more accurate and more GPS friendly than the Irish Grid Reference system. This will be used on the next generation of Irish OS maps.
