Visit Notes

Sunday, 27th January 2002

The fact that this tomb has withstood modern farming happening around it is probably due to the fact that it now forms part of a dry stone wall, which has more than likely given it some protection.

The chamber still has all the roof stones in place and measures some 5m long. Sadly, one of the roof stones has cracked and is in the process of sinking in moving one of the uprights outwards.

On the other side of the wall there may be traces of another chamber or even a courtyard.

Directions

Now that the M1 motorway is in place it is a little more difficult to reach this site. Take the N1 north from Drogheda and trun left just before you reach the motorway following the sign for Monasterboice. Continue until you reach the crossroads in Tinure and turn right and immediately right again. After about 900m you will arrive at a bungalow on the left opposite a large gate into a field. Park here and go through the gate. Follow the path round to the right and then turn left, heading south around the field boundary. After passing several piles of field clearance you will see a gate at the top of the field. The tomb is set into the wall to the left of this gate.
