'Derrynablaha A' : Rock Art

There is a group of four panels in this vicinity. Here I am covering two of them: the other two are very worn and covered under Derrynablaha B (County Kerry). The better of these two is a very unusual panel for this townland as it is quite small and the decoration is packed onto the stone and covers the whole surface. The boulder is about 1m long x 50cm across.
The sloping surface has over ten conjoined cup-and-ring markings, some of which have two rings. The change in decoration may have something to do with the type of rock: the markings on this stone are by far the best preserved in the valley that I have yet come across, although Derrynablaha 3 looks rather good, too!
The second panel I am including here is a rounded boulder just below the nice stone. This has a single cup-and-ring marking on it that is visible. I think there were more at one time, but the others have eroded badly.
The GPS coordinates I have used here are the ones supplied to me by Ken Williams, who first relocated the panels.

About Coordinates Displayed

This is an explanation of (and a bit of a disclaimer for) the coordinates I provide. Where a GPS figure is given this is the master for all other coordinates. According to my Garmin these are quite accurate. Where there is no GPS figure the 6 figure grid reference is master for the others. This may not be very accurate as it could have come from the OS maps and could have been read by eye. Consequently, all other cordinates are going to have inaccuracies. The calculation of Longitude and Latitude uses an algorithm that is not 100% accurate. The long/lat figures are used as a basis for calculating the UTM & ITM coordinates. Consequently, UTM & ITM coordinates are slightly out. UTM is a global coordinate system - Universal Transverse Mercator - that is at the core of the GPS system. ITM is the new coordinate system - Irish Transverse Mercator - that is more accurate and more GPS friendly than the Irish Grid Reference system. This will be used on the next generation of Irish OS maps. |
