Visit Notes

Sunday, 27th January 2008

When I finally reached this site I wasn't at all surprised that I didn't know of anyone who'd visited it. It is only a 75m walk, but it's an uphill walk that's quite punishing. The track to the site reaches a plateau and you think you're nearly there, then you realise you have to go up the next hill to reach the site.

The court is in good condition and is unusually V-shaped, rather than semi-circular. A handful of the façade stones are present at the north end of the cairn, as are a handful of kerb stones. The entrance to the short remains of the gallery is between two nice jambs that have a low sill stone between them. The gallery is represented by just the first chamber, which has been dug into. To one side of the chamber lies a large roofstone, presumably lying where it was thrown off the chamber.

A few metres behind the chamber there are two subsidiary chambers that come into the cairn at right angles to the tomb's axis. The east one has no backstone, while the west one is seemingly complete.

This is not a site to visit in the summer. It would be next to impossible to find it when the bracken is tall.
