| Templenaffrin - Church |
I was not at all prepared for the scale of this monument. As I rounded the rocky knoll which lies to the east of the stone and separates it from the nearby church, I couldn't believe that the huge boulder in the base of the valley could be the purpose of my visit. Not only its size, but the fact that it was not quite where the OS map marks it also put a little doubt in my mind. The 'fairy thorn' growing next to it dispelled some of by doubts, though, and I went to check it out.
As I approached I couldn't see any basins in the upper surface and I though I'd have to carry on searching. However, when I got to the stone and looked properly I could see that the three massive basins were full of moss and had brambles growing from them - no one has been here for quite a while, I've hardly ever seen bullauns in this condition.
The boulder is over 1m tall and 1m x 1m in plan. There are, as mentioned above, three massive basins. There is a very shallow depression that may just be the start of a fourth, but I don't think so.
The largest bullaun/basin is over 35cm across and 20cm deep. The northernmost bullaun seems to be a two-in-one. That is it looks as if a bullaun was ground into the bottom of an earlier one.
