This is special! Spread all around Ireland there are bullauns in streams or rivers and this is one of them. It took us a while to spot it as it is actually under the water.
Some people consider that stones such this are just natural formations caused by a round stone getting caught in a depression in the stone and being rolled around by the river, thus forming a circular hollow. If this is the case with this one then the stone that did it had an incredible sense of proportions, because the single bullaun is right in the centre of the stone.
The slab seems well imbedded into the river bed, so it's unlikely that it has been thrown into the stream. It measure about 1.5m long by 1m wide. The bullaun is quite small, perhaps a little under 20cm across, and looks quite deep relative to its diameter.
