I was totally taken aback by this beautiful stone. Measuring some 1.9m long and 1m at its widest it has 5 cups with single rings, 6 cups on their own, 1 cup with 2 concentric rings and 1 more with 3 concentric rings. These are now all fading and I was told that they were much bolder when the stone was unearthed. I feel this must have come from a tomb. Sadly, one corner has been broken off. There is one other rock nearby that has a very faint (and only possible) cup and rings on it.
There are several other possible sites very close to this one.
The landowners are a wonderful family extending much hospitality to me and even driving across the farm to see some items. They live at Wicklow Way Lodge and operate a B&B. If the generosity they showed me is any indication of the treatment guests get then it must be a great place to stay. The scenery in this area is beautiful.
Ken hadn't visited this stone, so we met up and called in to take some side-flash-lit pictures. The stone has eroded a bit more since my last visit, but the side-flash still managed to pick out some detail I hadn't seen before.
The best preserved motifs turned out to be even more special than they look. The multiple-ring cup mark has an extra cup set into one of the rings and some sun-ray like lines radiating from the outside of the rings, but these are evenly spaced nor do they line up with the centre of the design.
One of the worn cup and ring markings on the upper surface has a gutter, which I don't remember seeing before.
