Visit Notes

There are three cairns shown on the OS map at Piperstown. This is the best preserved one. It is also the only one to be excavated - labelled Site K on the excavation plan. The main excavation area lies to the east of the cairns and is dotted with hut circles.

The excavation revealed several standing stones beneath the cairn itself, which was interpreted as a stone circle. Looking at it now I think this is flawed. The diagram in the report clearly misses out several other stones that are set just outside the carin. The uncovered stones are just a very loose kerb.

The cairn is just 1m high and 2m in diameter.
