Visit Notes

Sunday, 1st January 2006

What a climb! This 'rath' is on the edge of a 80m high cliff! I was actually up here to visit the standing stone just 30m north of this earthwork - otherwise I would never have climbed up here.

I have to say that I don't think this is a rath. I think it is a henge. The external bank is higher than the inner surface and the fosse/ditch inside this outer bank doesn't make sense defensively. Being situated overlooking Holywood Glen below the cliffs probably made someone think that it was built to defend the pass, but it's too small and doesn't really have a good view down the whole road below.

The outer bank is upto 1.5m high and 30m in diameter. There is an causeway across the fosse on west side of the enclosure.

This site overlooks The Piper's Stones (County Wicklow) stone circle and offers a view of it that cannot be gained elsewhere, allowing you to appreciate it in its landscape setting.
