The whole of this area is associated with Brian Boru. Every B&B seems to be named after him or something to do with him. Just north of Killaloe a small signpost points the way up a long tree-shrouded track to the site of Brian Boru's fort - a large ring fort of fairly huge proportions.
The ditch suurounding the 4m high bank is up to 2m deep making it appear very impressive. The inner sanctum is around 40m in diameter, but the small forrest that is growing on it makes it difficult to judge. The entrance to the site is situated in the north bank and I suggest you walk around the outside of the fort and enter it from here for a much more dramatic feel. Somehow just walking up the bank seems a little bit lame.
