Visit Notes

The monastic site at Ballyvourney is one I’ve wanted to visit for a long time. There’s so much here of interest to all, offering a lovely fusion of Christian and pre-Christian monuments.

Each of these features is incorporated in the pattern performed here for centuries by pilgrims. All around the site stones are scratched with crosses, because it is customary for the pilgrims to make the sign of the cross with a pebble as they enter each station.

One of the stations, which I haven’t featured here, is a sheela-na-gig. This very battered and mounted above a window inside the old church.
