St. Mary’s is the largest church on the island. Inside there are numerous graveslabs lined up along the north wall. The altar is a 17th Century tomb with some lovely decoration on its sides.
On the south wall is a memorial, which actually belongs on top of the tomb now used as the altar, with a very curious carving on the top. This is of a female figure from roughly the waist up. She is wearing a pointed hat and has her arms folded across her chest.
When I saw the hat I couldn’t help being reminded of the so-called Celtic Wizards hats, which have been found in Ireland and Germany. Is this figure an example of reuse of a pagan carving? Certainly not. Should the Wizard Hats be known as Witches Hats? Probably.
