Of all the churches on the island this is my favourite. The fine Romanesque west doorway is a real treat. St. Brigit's is the smallest church on Inishcealtra and possibly the oldest. This is not the consensus amongst everyone though and is just my theory. Why do I think this? Mainly because, unlike the other churches, it is not aligned east-west, but slightly to the north of east usually a good indicator of an early construction date.

Also, the presence of so many bullaun stones on the island and the holy well do seem to point to a pre-Christian use of the island in a sacred Brigid worshipping context.

Photographs of this doorway with the round tower in the distance seem to be the most popular image of the island.
