If you're passing by this place stop off and take a look. This is the humble source of the mighty River Shannon. The longest river in the British Isles. Through its tributaries it drains over one third of the Island.
The 'Pot' is a 20m diameter sink or swallet hole that feeds a small stream. It's very hard to believe that this 1.5m wide trickle becomes the Shannon!
Apart from its 'wow' factor why put it on this website? Well, it has quite a plce in Irish folklorean d has been recognised as the source of the Shannon for a very long time. "Legend has it that Sinnann, the daughter of Lodan, came to the Shannon Pot in search of the Salmon of Wisdom. The great salmon was angered at the sight of Sinnann and caused the pool to overflow and drown the fleeing maiden. Thus was the Shannon created and which still bears her name", says the information sign.
While I was sitting on the edge of the Pot I saw a fish rise to take a fly. Was it the Salmon of Wisdom? I'd like to think so.
