'The Rock Of Doon' : Rock Outcrop

High above Doon Well (County Donegal) is a rocky outcrop with quite a history. The top of this craggy spot was used for the inauguration of the chieftains of the O'Donnells. There were 25 ceremonies in total between 1200ce and 1603ce, but I suspect that the site was of some ritual/sacred importance before that. The recorded ceremonies seem to only refer to those where a Christian ceremony had been already held at Kilmacrennan Abbey.
The views from the top are magnificent (even in a snow storm) with much of the surrounding lands visible, despite the outcrop being sited at the centre of a ring of low hills.

A lot has changed here since my last visit. The path to the top of the rock is now tarmac and there are handrails. The top of the rock has also had a large square of tarmac put down and there is a bench to sit on at the top.
I'm not sure that I like the changes, but I do appreciate that it does give better access for people.

This is an explanation of (and a bit of a disclaimer for) the coordinates I provide. Where a GPS figure is given this is the master for all other coordinates. According to my Garmin these are quite accurate. Where there is no GPS figure the 6 figure grid reference is master for the others. This may not be very accurate as it could have come from the OS maps and could have been read by eye. Consequently, all other cordinates are going to have inaccuracies. The calculation of Longitude and Latitude uses an algorithm that is not 100% accurate. The long/lat figures are used as a basis for calculating the UTM & ITM coordinates. Consequently, UTM & ITM coordinates are slightly out. UTM is a global coordinate system - Universal Transverse Mercator - that is at the core of the GPS system. ITM is the new coordinate system - Irish Transverse Mercator - that is more accurate and more GPS friendly than the Irish Grid Reference system. This will be used on the next generation of Irish OS maps. |
