I'd looked for this site a few weeks ago, but failed to locate it. I had driver up the track at the side of the church with the sculptured cross at Boho (County Fermanagh), but did not turn left towards the bungalow. When you reach the bungalow the six stones are very easy to find. Park in front of the bungalow and go down some steps, then over a stone stile and the rocks are visible to your right in the field.
There are six rocks in a clump, five of which are decorated. The largest panel is over 3m wide and 2m tall - practically the whole face is carved with cup and ring markings, a few of which have gutters. Many of these patterns overlap. This panel lying at angle with the carved face looking northeast. When I arrived the sun was behind the rock, so the carvings were in shadow. The best time to see them would be early morning or on a late summer evening.
Next to the east end of the main rock are four of the others. One of these has two very deep cup and ring motifs. Another has a few worn examples. THese two are tall, round-topped boulders, but the best carvings are on a third, flat stone which appears to have been broken from a larger one as one of its motifs is only half there.
Behind all these stones is the last carved boulder. This is about 1m tall and 1.5m across. The side facing the other stones has several good condition motifs on it.
Because the carvings were in shadow I resorted to the rock art lovers best solution for getting good images - water. I used to carry a big bootle around with me, but as I rarely visit rock art I've stopped doing it lately. Luckily I had an empty pop bottle in the car which I filled from a few small puddles in the field.
The beauty of these carvings made me want to stay all day, but I had to press on. Despite that I still spent well over an hour here. I had intended to come back in the late afternoon just to see where the sun was in relation to the carvings, but I didn't make it. Not to worry. I'll be back here for sure!
