Visit Notes

Sunday, 3rd October 2004

As I drove along I kept seeing signs for Boho and the name rang a bell. Then, as I approached the church I saw the cross and it all clicked into place. Only the shaft of this cross remains. The east face has some fine carving which includes an Adam and Eve panel and two good examples of knotwork. The west side has two figured panels, which are quite worn, but Harbison says one is of the Baptism of Christ. Low down in each side there is a round hole, the purpose of which are not clear.

The cross stands on a raised knoll to the rear of the modern church. The north, west and south of the site is guarded by hills, which form an ampitheatre open to the east. The site feels so much older than the Christian remains, which is attested to by the presence of rock-art in the locality (which I couldn't find).

There is a possible standing stone in the graveyard, as well as several interesting gravestones.
