Visit Notes

Sunday, 5th September 2004

As drove up to Uragh (County Kerry) there was some idiot parked in the middle of the big-enough-for-two-cars parking space with both the passenger and driver's doors wide open. Very considerate! At least three other cars came by looking to park and he just sat there looking all smug. It was too hot to argue so I drove on and decided I would visit this circle first.

This monument is located on the edge of an oak wood high up on the mountainside above the more visited Uragh stone circle. The contrast between the two couldn't really be greater. The eastern circle places you in the open and celebrates the landscape. This circle nestles between two rocky outcrops and seems so introverted.

Eight out of a probable twelve or thirteen stones are still upright. A few of the fallen ones lie where they fell. The three stones from the western side are built into a field wall that is no taller then them - about 80cm.

The reports that I had seen of this site said it had a quartz stone in the centre and two more outside the circle, so I was surprised to see a large boulder burial in the middle and two smaller ones outside and no sign of quartz stones.

The circle butts up against a low rocky outcrop on the north side, while to the southwest there is a very curious outcrop. The rocks have cracked and possibly been moved to form a little cave underneath it: big enough to climb into. There are some slabs of stone standing up towards the rear of this space, but I could see some straw behind them and didn't wish to disturb whatever has made a home there.
