I imagine that this was once a pleasant little spot ... then the foresters arrived. Apart from being surrounded by pine trees, which obscure the views an area of ground around the tomb has been bulldozed, removing at least 18 inches of soil/peat from around the tomb. What archaeology went with that lot?

The monument itself is quite good. Two very thick sidestones and a slightly displaced backstone support a single roofslab. A leaning stone to the front (west) of the gallery may be the doorstone. There must have been another roof slab at one point, perhaps just a thin lintel type stone.

The inside of the gallery has been dug out to at least 1m below the surrounding ground level. If this is to the old floor level then this would have stood nearly 2m tall! The remains of the gallery are 2m long and about 1m wide.

From on top of the roofslab one landscape feature is very visible and impressive to the southeast - the Slieve Felim Mountains in County Limerick.

About Coordinates Displayed

This is an explanation of (and a bit of a disclaimer for) the coordinates I provide.

Where a GPS figure is given this is the master for all other coordinates. According to my Garmin these are quite accurate.

Where there is no GPS figure the 6 figure grid reference is master for the others. This may not be very accurate as it could have come from the OS maps and could have been read by eye. Consequently, all other cordinates are going to have inaccuracies.

The calculation of Longitude and Latitude uses an algorithm that is not 100% accurate. The long/lat figures are used as a basis for calculating the UTM & ITM coordinates. Consequently, UTM & ITM coordinates are slightly out.

UTM is a global coordinate system - Universal Transverse Mercator - that is at the core of the GPS system.

ITM is the new coordinate system - Irish Transverse Mercator - that is more accurate and more GPS friendly than the Irish Grid Reference system. This will be used on the next generation of Irish OS maps.
