These two figures were first brought to my attention by Chris Corlett who recently wrote a short article on them in Archaeology Ireland magazine.
There is a folk history dating at least as far back as the 18th Century. It is said that these figures represent Finn McCool & his wife, who every morning come down from the mountain to bathe in the stream below and then go and cook breakfast at Boleycarrigeen (County Wicklow), which is why that site is known as the Giant's Griddle.
It's hard to say if these figures are natural, man-made or natural & enhanced. If they are purely natural then that adds to their wonderfulness! How incredible would it be if these were a natural phenomenon? One thing to note is that the figures are on quite a slope and it is only the foreshortening and perspective that makes these marks look like figures ... natural wonder or good engineering?
If you look to the right of the two main figures it is just possible to see a very faint impression of aa further figure that could have horns.
The best place to view these to the south of Boleycarrigeen stone circle on the road that runs north-south, just to the east of the site.
