Castletimon : Ogham Stone

This sad stone sits in an untidy niche at the side of the road. It is broken and would not be able to stand if it tried. The nearest house is owned by some English people who use it as a holiday home. They know of the Ogham stone but obviously do not care for it.
The Ogham is fading which is probably why it is still 'in situ'. A very sad sight.

The little roadside alcove holding the stone was a lot clearer than on my previous visit. The ogham was a little clearer also, but it is still very faint. I wanted to take a picture using some side flash, but the batteries were dead in one of my units. The reason I called in here was because I was looking for the bullaun stone down by the church, which isn't there anymore.

From Arklow take the N11 north and then take the 5th right turn (12km). At the next t-junction turn left and the right. Just 50m along you will see a forestry entrance on the right. The stone is on the opposite side of the road.

This is an explanation of (and a bit of a disclaimer for) the coordinates I provide. Where a GPS figure is given this is the master for all other coordinates. According to my Garmin these are quite accurate. Where there is no GPS figure the 6 figure grid reference is master for the others. This may not be very accurate as it could have come from the OS maps and could have been read by eye. Consequently, all other cordinates are going to have inaccuracies. The calculation of Longitude and Latitude uses an algorithm that is not 100% accurate. The long/lat figures are used as a basis for calculating the UTM & ITM coordinates. Consequently, UTM & ITM coordinates are slightly out. UTM is a global coordinate system - Universal Transverse Mercator - that is at the core of the GPS system. ITM is the new coordinate system - Irish Transverse Mercator - that is more accurate and more GPS friendly than the Irish Grid Reference system. This will be used on the next generation of Irish OS maps. |
