As I walked up to this tomb it started to rain ... heavily! So, when I came to a very viscious barbed-wire fence I really didn't feel like climbing over it. But from 10m away you can see an enormous amount of this tomb, because is is constructed from enormous stones.
The portal stones are about 2m tall and very heavy duty. The capstone has made the chamber totally collapse under its weight and now lies behind the portal stones.
Due to the rain and not particularly enjoying getting wet it took me a while to realise why this monument felt 'wrong'. It is aligned north to south with the portal at the north and it is on the very highest point of a ridge.
It does offer very fine views out over Sligo Bay. On a good day you could probably see Knocknarea from here to the south. The tomb would only have to point slightly west of north to face directly away from Knocknarea. The heavy rain stopped me getting my compass out to check the exact alignment.
