Before I left the island I wanted to see how accessible the tomb on the north side of Croaghaun Mountain was and came via the place marked as standing stone (at this grid ref) on the map.
On the way here, just past the west end of the village is a heavily quarried quartz outcrop. It is huge today, but before it was robbed away it must have been massive and very impressive. One cannot help but think that this may have been a proto-temple or place of power for the early inhabitants of this island.
Eventually I reached the spot marked on the map, but alas nothing. No stone anywhere, so I decided to sit down, have a piece of brack and a drink before setting off again. Just as I was getting up I turned to pick up my bag and realised I was sitting on a prostrate grave slab! What on earth is that doing up here?
The answer to the accessiblity of the other tomb? Not around the north of the island. You need to go over the mountain, for which I haven't got the time today.
