At last I've made it on to Achill Island! I've been wanting to get here for quite some time. I must say that I was very surprised to pass a sign for a crannog. The sign points along a track and then ..... nothing.
Again, I was lucky enough to have the OS map and I knew that the crannog was about 150m in that direction behind that bank there. Set in the peat bog is a small lake, which is fairly low because of some nearby quarrying. This actually allows you to see what might have been some stepping stones that were there to allow access to the crannog for 'those that know'.
It is quite a small island, just 12m or so in diameter and as usual is now covered by a thick copse.
