| Ballyquin - Standing Stone |
Like Whitestown East (County Waterford), this tomb consists of just a 4m long capstone one end of which rests on the ground and the other raised up on two unmatched portal stones. Unusually these two stones are set so as to form a flat frontage with a small doorway slightly off centre.
The monument stands in a boggy field in between a stream and the base of a west facing slope - a very similar position to Whitestown East. 200m a spring emerges beneath a tree.
The lovely piece of stone used for the capstone is a pebble encrusted mud stone.

I do love this odd little tomb. The sound of the stream at the bottom of the field is so relaxing. You a need relaxing ambience here, because crossing the 30m stretch of very boggy field just inside the gate is quite unnerving.
The weeds and brambles that blighted this monument on my last visit have been cleared up and it looks so much better for it. A big 'Thank You!' to whoever did that.
