Driving south from Gaulstown this stone, nearly 4m tall, dominates a false horizon created by the ridge it occupies. I parked the car and wondered up and down the road frantically trying to find a way into it. Eventually I found the gate just over the other side of the brow.
Walking across the field the stone just keeps getting bigger against a dramatically rocky hillside backdrop. All the time the shape becomes more familiar. I finally realised that this is for two reasons - 1) this stone is on the front cover of the Waterford Archaeological Inventory & 2) there is an element of Easter Island head about its profile.

I really wanted to stand by this great stone again, but it was not to be. The friendly sign to the stone has gone and electric fences now cross the field and even block the gate. All we could do was stand at the gate and look at the stone from there.

From Tramore take the R682 north. At the third crossroads turn left and continue for 2.5km until you come to a right turn. Take this and you will see the stone on your right after about 500m.
