| Donaghmore - Bullaun Stone |
Due to rain I decided to head home and for some reason chose a route through Donaghmore, I don't know why. I hadn't really "looked' at the map and I had actually forgotten that there was a high cross here. The cross is hard to miss however, because it stands right at a very busy road junction, where i needed to turn left.
The top of the cross head has been broken off and a lot of the panels are very eroded. Several are still clearly discernable though, including Adam & Eve, and the sacrifice of Isaac amongst others. a sign by the side of it is very informative and indicates what all the panels are supposed to be.
In 2001 a 'replica' cross was erected in the graveyard behind the original. This is very good but the carving is too shallow, but still worth looking at. I wonder what this copy will look like in 1000 years time ...
