Just for being where it is this lovely tomb gets full marks! It's in the tapir and Patagonian mara enclosure at Dublin Zoo.
I owe the keeper of these animals a big "thank you" for letting me into the enclosure to take some pictures. Thanks Donal! I'm just glad it isn't in the lion cage!
The kist was moved to the zoo from just down the road at Chapelizod, possibly near to Phoenix Park (County Dublin). It is a large eroded mud rock slab that rests upon two upright wall stones, forming a stone-table-like structure. Between the oddly paired uprights is a thin slab that forms a floor to the 60cm cubed chamber. Its top stands about 1.3m tall. Unfortunately it is positioned so that you can't see it properly (there's an icecream shop and the tapir's house in front of it.) You certainly wouldn't know it's there if you didn't know it was there - it does look like a bit of modern art.
However, apart from the tapirs getting a good rub and the maras hiding from the rain inside it will come to no harm where it is. It's just a shame that the zoo don't make more of it.
