I really wasn't expecting such a beautiful sweathouse a this. And it's so accessible too - just 50m from the road. The structure is free standing and shaped like a bell with one side shaved off. I thought, as I approached it, that the shaved off part must be where the door is, but it has been removed to accommodate a track that runs past it.

It is built on a slope behind some now derelict farm buildings. Its top is 2.5m high at the front. The doorway is tiny, even for a sweathouse. It is just 50 - 60cm high and under 50cm wide.

Inside, the roof is steeply corbelled until it a gap about 40cm is met, about 1.7m up. At this point a large capstone has been placed to complete the roof, on which there is no sign of any soot remaining. Some of the stones below this capstone are set in cement, but even so some roots seem to have penetrated the chamber now.

Uta's never seen a sweathouse before, so it seemed logical to stop here while we were so close. I was surprised that there is a sign at the end of the road saying 'Sweathouse'. So, I was even more surprised that there isn't really proper access to the site! Perhaps this will come.

I went inside this time and took some pictures of the amazing corbelled roof.
